Before you hop on your motorcycle, you should always check these things:
Tires: Look at your tires closely. Are they worn out? Do they have enough air? Tires that aren’t in good shape can make your ride dangerous.
Brakes: Check both your front and back brakes. Make sure the brake pads aren’t too worn down. Your brakes should feel firm when you squeeze them.
Lights: Turn on all your lights. Check your headlight, taillight, brake light, and turn signals. Make sure they’re all working.
Oil and Fuel: Check your oil level and make sure you have enough gas. Running out of either while riding can be really dangerous.
Chain or Belt: If your motorcycle has a chain or belt, make sure it’s not too loose or too tight. It should also be clean and oiled if it’s a chain.
Mirrors: Adjust your mirrors so you can see behind you clearly.
Horn: Give your horn a quick beep to make sure it works.
Leaks: Look under your motorcycle. If you see any wet spots on the ground, you might have a leak.
Stands: Check that your kickstand or center stand works right and stays up when you’re riding.
Controls: Make sure your handlebars, clutch, and throttle all move smoothly.
What if I detect a problem on my motorcycle?
If you find a problem during your inspection, here’s what you should do:
Don’t ride: If something’s wrong, it’s not safe to ride until it’s fixed.
Figure out how serious it is: Some problems, like a burnt-out turn signal bulb, might be easy to fix yourself. Others, likebrake problems, are more serious.
Fix it yourself if you can: If it’s something small and you know how to fix it, go ahead. But only if you’re sure you can do it right.
Take it to a mechanic: If you’re not sure how to fix the problem or if it’s something big, take your motorcycle to a professional mechanic.
Keep a record: Write down what problems you find and when you fix them. This can help you keep track of your motorcycle’s condition over time.
Accidents when others fail to inspect and maintain motorcycles
Sometimes, people don’t check their motorcycles before riding. This can lead to accidents. Here are some things that can happen:
Tire blowouts: If tires are too worn or don’t have enough air, they can suddenly burst while riding. This can cause the rider to lose control andcrash.
Brake failures: If brakes aren’t working right, the rider might not be able to stop in time to avoid an accident.
Light problems: If lights aren’t working, other drivers might not see the motorcycle, especially at night.
Engine failures: If the motorcycle engine stops working while riding, it can cause the motorcycle to stop suddenly, which can be very dangerous.
Chain or belt breaks: If these break while riding, the motorcycle can lose power suddenly.
If someone gets hurt because another rider didn’t check their motorcycle, they might be able to sue that rider. This is because all riders have a responsibility to make sure their motorcycles are safe before they ride.
